A lot of controversy is surrounding the US 2nd Amendment

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Following the shooting at the Batman movie in Colorado, a lot of controversy is surrounding the United States 2nd Amendment. Someone on my Facebook put up a post stating it was no longer the days of the frontier, and that our right to own a firearm should no longer exist. I don’t agree with this statement. I believe it is and should always be a right to own firearms. There will always be those people who abuse this right and use it for malicious intent, but getting rid of the right to own a firearm will not solve the problem. The black market for guns will grow and so will our safety.

Think of this. Say a criminal gets his hand on an illegal gun. Now lets say there is a couple who used to own a firearm for protection, but because the government took away the 2nd Amendment, they had to get rid of it. Say the criminal decides to rob this family’s home, and they no longer has a means to defend themselves. What now?

Think this story sounds far fetched? On July 13th, 2012, two robbers came into an Internet Cafe. A 71 year old man with a concealed weapons permit shot the two robbers (not fatally), and prevented what could have been a disaster.

By taking away the right to keep and bear arms you take a sense of security away from the average American. Taking away the 2nd Amendment will not magically make owning a gun impossible - it just makes a firearm harder to obtain. It will create a larger black market for firearms. The outcome? The people who should not have a firearm will own them, but the average American will not.
